The doc thinks he's an idiot, and that's okay. Makes it easier to surprise him. Because maybe he doesn't have any of those fancy school smarts, but that don't make him stupid. He's clever where it counts, clever in all the ways the doc isn't, and that suits him just fine. Hell, he kind of likes it better that way. Well, most of the time. Times that aren't right now.

Because Jayne hasn't figured out the exact how of it yet, but he's right sure that the doc knows. Yeah, he could probably try saying something about being away from port for too long and how the doc's kind of pretty like girl, but that's not gonna hold no water when there's a bona fide companion on board. Zoe's a looker too, and the fact that she'd probably shoot him if he ever tried anything isn't exactly a turn off; he's always opined that the pleasure's always better with a bit of pain. Shit, even Kaylee's got a nice enough pair of stems on her that he's not getting away with that one.

So there's no denying it, and the doc knows. The thing is, Jayne's always been the kind of man who recognizes and embraces his tells. He's been lying, cheating, and fighting his way out of trouble for as long as he can remember, and if he hadn't figured them out early on, then he'd be a lot deader today than he currently is. So he knows all the ways he could have given himself away, and he knows that he hasn't. Which means that the doc probably knows because of something he learned in one of his schools-don't they teach docs about all that psychological mumbo jumbo?-and Jayne can't help but think that if he'd had a bit more book learning, he might have been able to avoid this easy as a sloppy shooter. Because it's either that or he's a rutting reader like his crazy sister. Who probably knows too. And that's a whole lot of knowing to be going on when he ain't strictly comfortable about half of it.

Course, that night when the ship's gone all quiet and the doc sneaks into his bed, he ain't exactly about to start complaining about his wounded pride. Especially not when the doc's not complaining about that tiny, barely noticeable cut Jayne gave him when he startled him awake. Ain't no way he's gonna let that sly, pompous bastard get any kind of upper hand on him.

Thank you for reading! Feedback is always appreciated!

First commenter gets to pick the next prompt! When requesting, please keep in mind that I try to keep these between 100-500 words. I don't mind going over occasionally, but the prompt should be something I can realistically fill within that limit. For a list of my fandoms, go here.

I've got to stop writing these things in the middle of the night. Seriously. Because this? Yeah, I don't even know. There's no excuse. This is just...yeah. I'm going to go pretend I didn't write this now.

IMPORTANT: Because of classes, I'm several episodes behind on Criminal Minds and still haven't caught up yet. If you request something for Criminal Minds, PLEASE keep that in mind and keep the spoilers AWAY from my journal. Thanks!
