ETA: Aaaand if people would like to add to the picspam with more happy things, that would be really awesome right about now, because I'm slightly drunk and tipping over from 'emotionally flayed' to 'trying not to wibble pathetically into my wineglass because someone on the internet was rude and dismissive and basically called me mentally incompetent because of my religious beliefs'. BUT I am determined not to stop smiling, because I believe the best way to fight hate is with love. So, in that vein, I love you guys. You are wonderful and awesome and if I can make you smile even occasionally then I'm thrilled.

The more I think about it, as badly as I feel for myself over what they said, I feel that much sadder for them. I'm all for the separation of church and hate. Jesus's main message, translated into contemporary English was: "Don't be a dick." Why don't some people realize that? I could seriously point out the places in the New Testament where Jesus preaches against hate of any kind, but people get cranky when I do that, so...

I also feel bad for the people who just don't understand that their beliefs aren't necessarily right for everyone else.

Exactly. I believe that my beliefs are correct. If I didn't, I wouldn't believe them. HOWEVER, I also believe that people with other beliefs have no reason to respect what I believe if I'm not willing to do the same for them and try my hardest to keep that in mind at all times.

*I'm paraphrasing.

Apparently, I should be committed until I've gotten the help I 'need' and can learn to cope with life without the help of my 'imaginary friend'. At this point I mostly just feel sad that someone who's claiming one of the reasons they're against religion is because it's so intolerant doesn't see the blatant hypocrisy and intolerance in himself.

I had this fun discussion years back, with a high school 'buddy' of mine when she found out I was an atheist and she just could not wrap her mind around the fact when my best friend was very, very Christian. Like, does my friend try to convert me or what? Hooooooow?
I swear I just about blew this chick's mind with the whole conundrum.

Exactly. My being religious isn't at all a secret, but I try not to get pushy about it. If people want to know what I believe, I'll tell them. If people want to intelligently debate religion, I'm more than happy to. But to tear into someone's religious beliefs and treat them like they're an idiot while making it abundantly clear that you don't even understand what it is that they believe? That's not on. Telling someone they're delusional and in need of professional help because they believe in something they can't prove is real while ignoring the fact that you can't prove it isn't? That makes me want to bang my head against a wall.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that as a general rule of thumb, since nobody knows with 100% certainty what's waiting after we die, there's no reason to be a dick about it now. /rambling
