Kevin takes a bite of chili, hyper sensitive to the way Javier's watching him, completely intent on his expression. He forces a smile that feels more like a grimace and chews. Something crunches. The peppers and onions are so soggy they feel like slime on his tongue and Kevin really, really hopes he never finds out exactly what it is he's chewing on right now. He swallows, which should be enough to get him some kind of commendation for bravery.

"Yum," he manages, though it doesn't sound all that convincing in his own ears. Javier frowns, first at him, then at the chili, then back at him. Kevin tries another smile, which feels a little more convincing than the last, though it's definitely a little bit wobbly. Javier crosses his arms over his chest.

"Maybe a little more salt," Kevin suggests. "And pepper."

"Oh come on, it can't be that bad," Javier huffs, grabbing a spoon and taking a taste from his bowl. For a long, quiet moment, they just look at each other, then Javier drops his spoon and mutters something in Spanish that Kevin doesn't think he wants a translation of. "You call for take out and I'll find something to wash that taste out of our mouths."

Kevin grins and kisses Javier as he circles the table to grab the menus stuck to the fridge. "The fact that you're big enough to admit when you're wrong is one of the many reasons I love you." He pauses, then winks at Javier when he swats at him. "But you're pretty damn lucky that I'm mostly dating you for your body."

"I'm not leaving you behind!" Javier bellows over the pulsing techno music. Kevin just looks at him blankly and gestures at his flashing vest.

"Bro. I'm dead. I can't exactly come with you." It's sound, rational thinking, so of course that means he ends up slung over Javier's shoulder before he can so much as blink.

"I will not leave a man behind. If I do, those bastards win!"

Kevin bites his tongue to keep from pointing out that he's fairly certain that Alexis just killed Castle, which means Beckett's probably about to claim their flag at this very moment, so they've pretty much lost anyway. So, Kevin muses, his partner has lost his mind and he's being carried around like a sack of potatoes. But on the plus side he has a pretty fantastic view of Javier's ass from this angle. All in all, it's not the worst way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

It's stupid to be nervous, Javier thinks, but that doesn't stop him from straightening his shirt again and absently wishing he'd chosen today to start wearing ties. Kevin's by their desks, talking to an older, conservative looking couple who look way too much like him for comfort, and Javier lingers in the break room doorway and wonders if he's still a fast enough sprinter to get out the door before they notice him standing there.

It's stupid, so incredibly stupid, especially since Mrs. Ryan is standing with her arm hooked through Jenny's and keeps smiling at her-Kevin's smile, Javier notices-like she's fulfilling all of her dreams. It doesn't matter what Kevin's parents think of him, except for the way that it does.

Before he can make his getaway, Kevin looks over and sees him standing there and waves him over with a wide, guileless grin. Javier goes, because it's impossible for him not to, and even though this is his own personal hell, he can't help but feel something inside of him lighten when Kevin looks at him like that, all open and happy.

"Bro, I want you to meet my parents. Ma, da, this is my partner, Javier Esposito," Kevin says, rocking back on his heels and smiling fit to outshine the sun. Mr. Ryan, who Javier knows had been a cop for over thirty years, looks at him with eyes that miss nothing, but his handshake is warm and firm.

Mrs. Ryan clasps his hand in both of hers and asks, "So, you're the one who's protecting my boy?"

Javier's stomach is churning like butter at an Amish farm, but he can't help but smile back at her and answer, "With my life, ma'am. Just like he does for me."

Mr. Ryan frowns a little and Jenny looks confused. Kevin smacks him on the back and laughs.

One Year Later

"They're not going to like me. They'll think I'm not good enough," Kevin says, throwing up his hands in defeat when his tie unravels under his fingers for the third time. Javier circles around their bed and gently starts to retie it, carefully looping the ends over each other the way his father had taught him as a child.

"They'll love you, Kev," he says, looking up from the perfect double windsor knot to meet Kevin's eyes. "Everything'll be fine. At the very least I'm positive it'll go better than when I met your parents."

"At least my dad's stopped calling you 'that home wrecker'," Kevin says thoughtfully. He leans in and kisses Javier, a soft, slow slide of lips that makes Javier's head spin. When he pulls back, he's smiling, but then the worried line between his eyes makes a reappearance and he tugs nervously on his tie. "And you don't know that. They really might hate me."

"I'm telling you, they'll love you," Javier insists, batting Kevin's hands away from the knot before he can mess it up. "They'll love you because I love you."

Kevin laughs and says, "God, you are such a sap," but he's less tense than he was before when Javier wraps an arm around his waist and tugs him toward the door.

The young man is jumping and flailing all over the crime scene and Kevin could almost deal with the way he's basically destroying all the evidence, except then he takes things a step further and wraps himself around Javier like a spider monkey. Which, yeah, okay, so maybe there isn't anything officially going on between the two of them, especially what with the fall out with Lanie and Jenny after the Incident at Castle's New Year's Eve party, but Kevin's spent more time in Javier's bed the last few months than his own, which has to count for something. And one of those things had better damn well be not letting some obviously fake psychic cop a feel of his maybe, possibly, at-the-very-least-they're-meandering-in-that-general-direction boyfriend.

Kevin's a nice guy-again, if you don't include the Incident-and he's about as level headed as they come, but if that shifty, tan bastard doesn't learn boundaries in the next few seconds, he's going to shoot at him. And he's a damn good shot. He's mentally filling in the police report about why it was necessary to shoot a civilian when the detective-and that much as least Kevin does believe-who showed up with the psychic-and Kevin can't possibly be the only one who notices the fact that he's now stepping on the body-looks up from his conversation with Beckett and levels a glare at the two of them.

"Spencer," he snaps, his voice sharp enough to cut glass, and the idiot perks up immediately, a huge smile blooming on his face as he lets go of Javier and prances-prances!-over to the taller man's side. The detective says something too low for Kevin to hear, although the faintly horrified look on Beckett's face speaks volumes. Instead of looking chastised though, the psychic laughs and slings an arm around the other man's waist, pressing tight against him. The detective grimaces and the tips of his ears turn red, but he makes no move to push him away.

And, okay, that's unexpected, but it doesn't make the glare Kevin aims at Javier any weaker. Javier falters, his eyes wide. "What? What did I do?"

Kevin just rolls his eyes and goes to salvage what's left of the crime scene.

"Wrong."

"I swear to God, I'm going to punch him right in the face."

"Sherlock, we've talked about this."

"But they're wrong, John. And stupid."

"Oh, that tears it. No, Kev, let me go. Gonna punch him right in his soon-to-be bloody face."

"It's not worth the paperwork, bro."

"Also, they're rather poorly dressed."

"Okay, that's crossing the line. My mom got me this tie."

"It's a lovely tie. Sherlock, apologize."

"It's an ugly polyester tie. I will not."

"I'm going to break your nose."

"Besh dey evah."

"Castle. What the hell?"

"Popcorn, Beckett?"
