The air in the infirmary is suddenly too thick to breathe. There are containers of pure oxygen within steps, but Simon's frozen to this spot, the small of his back pressed hard against the sharp edge of a counter. He wriggles a little, trying to find something resembling a comfortable position-really, at this point he'd settle for one that looked like it could be from a distance if you were squinting-but even that much movement earns him a glare. Jayne's large, solid hands are braced against the counter on either side of Simon, so close that he could brush his thumbs against his hips if either of them shifted a hair's breadth in the right direction. Simon licks his lips and somehow manages to forget how to work his jaw-he must have, because that's the only explanation he can think of for why it's gaping open the way it is.

Jayne's breath is hot on Simon's face, his eyes trained on his wet, open mouth. Simon has no idea how they got from arguing about River to this, but when Janye's lips meet his, just as pushy and demanding as everything else about the insufferable man, he can't quite find it in himself to care.​
