Derek shifted to look beyond Spencer into his apartment. It was dim, most of the light coming from the glowing television screen in the corner. There was a glass of some clear liquid on the coffee table, but he couldn't tell if it was water or something stronger. He leaned in a little closer and inhaled deeply, trying to see if he could smell anything on Spencer's breath, but the younger man noticed and his scowl sharpened.
"Are you really trying to do what I think you're doing? Do you really think that I would come back here and start drinking because you acted like a jackass tonight?" Spencer's eyes flashed with grim satisfaction when Derek winced. "It's water, Derek. If I drank every time you were an insensitive bastard, I'd be a lush. I'd have to pick up a second job because I wouldn't be able to afford to keep my supplies high enough. I'd be Dionysus."
"Okay, I get your point, I was out of line. I'm sorry, Spencer. Can we please go inside and talk?" Derek tried to walk into the apartment, surreptitiously checking to see if any of Spencer's neighbor's had noticed his lover's raised voice yet, but Spencer stayed where he was, blocking his way. He stared hard at Derek, his eyebrows shooting up.
"You were 'out of line'? Derek, you started kissing a random woman in the middle of the bar! That's a little more than just being 'out of line'!"
Derek raised his hands in surrender and nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry. I really am. But it's not like I didn't try to stop her," he said placatingly.
Spencer arched an incredulous eyebrow. “Derek, you're over six feet tall, nearly 200 pounds of solid muscle, and a trained FBI agent. Are you really trying to tell me that you couldn't keep a drunk, emaciated, five foot tall girl from kissing you against your will?”
"I swear to you, Spencer, with the way she was clinging to me, I don't think she was completely human." Derek tried a joking smile. "She climbed me like a spider monkey."
Judging by the way Spencer's mouth tightened, he was less than impressed. Derek cleared his throat, his smile fading, and changed tactics. "It was a mistake. I get that, okay? It should never have happened. But please, Spencer, don't do this to us. Don't throw what we have away just because I screwed up. I love you."
Spencer blinked, clearly startled. "You've never said that before."
"Well, I should have. I do, Spencer. Please, let me in so we can talk about this." Derek attempted an appealing smile this time. Spencer's expression darkened and he licked his lips.
"You love me," he said slowly, examining Derek like he was one of his complex math equations. "Why are you telling me this now?"
Derek floundered a little and rubbed the back of his neck. "Because I think you should know. I want you to know that I'm serious about you. I love you."
“And you really mean it,” he asked, his tone warning that Derek had better answer the right way.
“Come on, you have to know I do. I love you so much, pretty boy. Why don't we go inside and I'll show you how much I love you.” Derek tried to reach out to stroke Spencer's cheek, but Spencer jerked away and kicked him in the ankle, dislodging his foot, his eyes narrowed with disgust.
“Go fuck yourself,” he said and slammed the door in Derek's face.
