Notes: Part of my French Girls verse.
Kate's hiding in the back corner of the dining hall with a picked at plate of lasagna pushed to the side and her anthropology notes spread across the table the first time she sees them together. It takes a minute--she has an exam in an hour and Castle had kept her up until 3AM with drunken texts about Star Wars--but when she finally realizes that the two guys headed toward her are Javier and who must to be his new boyfriend, she nearly snorts chocolate milk out of her nose. Javier looks the same as always, comfortable and practical in a thin t-shirt stretching over his broad shoulders and the old, worn jeans he's been fighting Lanie about throwing out since freshman year.
But the boyfriend...
Lanie had tried to give her a heads up about Javier's new flame. Lanie had obviously not done a good enough job.
His hair is gelled into pink tipped spikes.
His skintight pants are blue and purple checked.
His shirt looks like someone took a box cutter to it.
He's everything she would expect Javier to roll his eyes at and dismiss and absolutely nothing like anyone she'd ever try to set him up on a date with.
But...
Javier's smiling at him like he's responsible for the sun rising that morning and has a possessive arm wrapped around his waist in an act of PDA that she's never seen from him.
More importantly, he's balancing a tray with three coffee cups on it and when they get close enough to talk without having to yell, he lifts it a little bit and says, "You looked like you could use one. I'm Kevin, by the way."
She blinks at him as she accepts the mug. "Kate. Thanks for that," she says after taking a sip. The table really is almost completely covered by her papers, but it's easy enough to sweep them closer to her. It's definitely worth it when she gets wide smiles from both of them as they sink down into the seats across from her, Javier pulling out Kevin's seat that makes Kevin shoot him a small, amused looked.
"I'm studying," she says, pointing a stern finger at them. "No distracting me."
Javier ignores her in favor of snagging her leftover lasagna and adding it to his own plate. Kevin smiles impossibly wider, his eyes flickering over what he can see of her notes.
"My roommate took that class last semester. If you want, I could quiz you."
"Oh god, yes please," Kate says almost before he gets the offer out, and Kevin laughs and takes the papers she shoves at him.
She can't help sneaking glances between them while she studies, trying to figure it out. Their styles and mannerisms are so different that it's almost jarring, but there's a sweetness in the way they look at each other, a tenderness whenever one reaches out to casually brush fingertips over the back of a hand or the side of a neck, and Kate feels a low kick of envy in her stomach in response.
