I don't know how Rodney would be gruff military guy (though I can see John as chaplain in a strange way) but I WANT to know. I want to see it. And read it, yes. Yes it too. Over and over again.

He would obviously be Canadian military, because their rules are so much less archaic than the US's. I think he would mostly just be very, very grumpy. Like, he still grew up this huge genius geek and spent so much time getting the shit beat out of him by the jocks, and he's in charge now, but he still has some of that insecurity buried deep, deep down and he tries to hide it by overcompensating and barking out orders and being the taskmaster from hell. Everyone hates him, except for how they really don't, because he treats them like shit, but he's the only one that's allowed to and he'll destroy anyone who comes after his people, even if it means he has to sneak into the labs and build a death ray to do it. So he's an asshole, but he's their asshole, and they know that when he berates them, it's his own fucked up way of telling them that he believes they can be even better than they already are, because if you're really hopeless, then his eyes kind of slide over you like you aren't even there and after that happens you're probably going to get a visit from Lorne politely telling you you're being shipped the hell out.

And then there's John, who's kind of like Father Mulcahy from MASH, right down to having a punching bag in his quarters. He's laid back and soothing and very occasionally a little bit scary, but everyone knows that he's the guy you go to if you really need something. The only thing he doesn't have a handle on is his feelings for Rodney. At first he was just this guy, but then one day he saw him smile--really SMILE--and it was like a neon sign lit up over his head saying 'THIS ONE'. And John has never questioned becoming a priest, not since his helicopter was shot down and he screwed up his eyes just enough that he'd never be allowed to fly the really cool jets again, but Rodney makes him doubt, which is more dangerous than facing down a thousand Wraith.
